- The ToteSavvy insert ($50 - $100) helped me organize my work purse without having to buy a new bag and it transfers easily to other totes.
- The ToteSavvy is actually marketed as a modern alternative to a diaper bag (by combining an inner lining with your favorite handbag), but that's just one use. Pretty much anyone can appreciate the insulated bottle pocket, key clasp, and flat pocket for paperwork.
- If you're looking for next-level organization for work, trips, or want an easy and versatile solution to the diaper bag, this is one life-hack I've loved using.
Have you ever gotten to your car, your door, or the subway turnstile and reluctantly stepped to the side to rifle through a sweatshirt, loose water bottle, laptop and other miscellaneous knick-knacks in your bag until you could locate your keys or metro card? Or, if you were magicked away to a million-dollar prize game show right now, could you name all of the items at the bottom of your own bag without looking?
As you might have guessed, I could easily relate to the first scenario and would have undoubtedly failed the second only a little bit ago. But after about four months of digging my arm up to my elbow into my work purse every morning, I started using the ToteSavvy bag insert.
It ranges in price from $49.99 to $99 on Amazon, and it's technically engineered as a way to combine the traditional lining of a diaper bag with your favorite purse. But it's also a pretty great (and relatively affordable) life-hack for a run-of-the-mill tote organizer, with or without the diaper bag needs. I'd had my eye on the luxe Cuyana microsuede insert ($95) before finding this one, but it kept selling out — and I was willing to admit I may even need more function than form.
Like many women I know, my "work bag" doesn't offer its own organizational system (if you're looking for one of those, you'll want to direct your attention to Dagne Dover). Instead, it resembles more of a large leather sack with a small internal pocket cut into the side. On the days when I take home my laptop and paperwork, or try to fit sneakers and a change of clothes for the gym, most of my things wind up mixed together.
The ToteSavvy insert is a great purse organizer, even if you only use it for keeping your keys within reach rather than for a baby bottle. It's made out of water- and stain-resistant nylon, has a key clasp and an insulated bottle pocket (which you can use for anything), as well as pockets dedicated to holding your cell phone and a flat one for paperwork or tablets. And if you are planning on using it as a diaper bag, it also has a removable changing mat. If you want something more simplistic with fewer pockets, though, you may opt for the aforementioned Cuyana insert if it's in stock.
You can grab one in colors like black, luxe red, soft grey, and coffee (depending on how much you want to spend or what bags you want it to disappear into) as well as in either the mini or full-sized dimensions. The mini is 9.5" L x 9" H when inside a handbag, and the larger insert (which I have) is 14" L x 10" H when inside.
A few of the biggest perks for me have been the ample pockets, the fact that it stays put rather than trying to pull out every time I grab something from a deep pocket, the helpful organizational tools (key clasp, phone pocket, paperwork pocket), the relatively low cost, and the fact that I can pull it out and transfer it to another tote so easily. If I need to take out my weekly gear for a big open space I can just stuff clothes into for a weekend trip, I can. I don't need another tote or to waste time reorganizing the same things. Plus, it has enough structure to remain upright inside my bag rather than melting into whatever things I already have inside.
And depending on the color you get, it really does just disappear into your tote. Its functionality with being made out of nylon rather than leather doesn't actually matter if no one else can really tell the difference. You'll be able to tell, but it's up to you whether or not you mind that.
It looks like the ToteSavvy solves a common problem for moms (having their organized diaper bag with them when they need it and a regular handbag when they don't), but they've also perhaps unintentionally made a really inexpensive and supercharged purse organizer. If you're looking for one, this is a life-hack I've recommended to a lot of friends. You'll get tons of pockets, a water-resistant finish in case you spill coffee or a pen breaks, a still-flexible structure that sits upright on its own (making it easier to tuck your laptop and notebooks against it reliably), and you can switch bags completely in one easy movement. It's a pretty great tool for $50.
