Ezekiel Mutai from Kenya and Salome Nyirarukundo from Rwanda win the 2018 Montréal marathon
MONTREAL, Sept. 23, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - The city's streets welcomed close to 11,000 registered runners as part of the Oasis International Marathon de Montréal's marathon and half-marathon events held on the 28ty edition of the event. Participants, aged 13 to 82, represented 61 different countries, with 86% coming from Quebec. Ezekiel Mutai from Kenya won the 42.2 k race with a time of 2:11:05, setting a new course record in Montréal. On the women's side, Salome Nyirarukundo from Rwanda, was competing in her first marathon. She offered a strong performance finishing in 2:28:02, also setting a new mark in Montreal.

This year, the 42.2-kilometre route was fully redesigned to take athletes through downtown and Old Montreal, with a quick jaunt through the Old Port before heading to the Southwest borough and along the Lachine Canal. The marathoners then returned via Robert-Bourassa Boulevard and Sainte-Catherine Stret before climbing upward to the Plateau-Mont-Royal and turning east. The runners also had the opportunity to cross through Montreal's Botanical Garden before making a final dash to the finish line.
A new Guinness World record!
It is worth acknowledging runner Sébastien Roulier's performance in meeting his challenge to break the Guinness World record for the fastest marathon pushing a wheelchair. Together with his copilot Marie-Michèle, he crossed the finish line in 3:01:25, 34 minutes faster than the preceding mark.
